What an Operating System (OS) is?
An operating system or OS is a software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a computer operating system, a computer and software programs would be useless.

Which are its characteristics?
1. Job or process management.
2. Magagement of I/O devices and resourcess.
3. Scheduling job batch.
4. Memory handling/allocation/managemet.
5. File handling/managemen.
6. Error reporting.

How can operating systems be classified?
GUI - Short for Graphical User Interface, a GUI Operating System contains graphics and icons and is commonly navigated by using a computer mouse.

Multi-user - A multi-user operating system allows for multiple users to use the same computer at the same time and different times.

Multiprocessing - An operating system capable of supporting and utilizing more than one computer processor.

Multitasking - An operating system that is capable of allowing multiple software processes to run at the same time.

Multithreading - Operating systems that allow different parts of a software program to run concurrently.

What is mobile operating system?
A mobile operating system (mobile OS) is an OS built exclusively for a mobile device, such as a smartphone, personal digital assistant (PDA), tablet or other embedded mobile OS. Popular mobile operating systems are Android, Symbian, iOS, BlackBerry OS and Windows Mobile. What is network operating system?
A network operating system is an operating system designed for the sole purpose of supporting workstations, database sharing, application sharing and file and printer access sharing among multiple computers in a network.

What is a Multi-user Operating System?
When referring to a computer operating system, a multi-user system is a computer with an operating system that supports multiple users at once or different times.
The common examples of multi-user operating system include VMS, Unix, and mainframe operating systems which include MVS system.

What is a multiprocessing Operating System?

Multiprocessing system is based on the symmetric multiprocessing model, in which each processor runs an identical copy of operating system and these copies communicate with each other. In this system processor is assigned a specific task. A master processor controls the system. This scheme defines a master-slave relationship. These systems can save money in compare to single processor systems because the processors can share peripherals, power supplies and other devices.

What is a multitasking Operating System?
A multitasking operating system is any type of system that is capable of running more than one program at a time. Most modern operating systems are configured to handle multiple programs simultaneously, with the exception of some privately developed systems that are designed for use in specific business settings.
